The core of Linux (kernel, essential libraries and binaries) has always been y2k-compliant (though not 2038-compliant). However, Linux distributions include much more application and utility software than is normally included in commercial Unix distributions, and these additional programs are not always written with the same care that the core system is. One other issue with Linux is the underlying hardware. Since it usually runs on PC hardware, the same hardware apply as in Windows -- many BIOS implementations are not y2k-compliant.
